INTERACTION: Bringing Real-Life Movement into Stroke Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation doesn’t end when a patient leaves the clinic. Yet, for a long time, most evaluations have been limited to controlled environments, offering only a partial view of recovery.

Within the INTERACTION project, Smartex contributed to the development of a wearable sensing system designed to change this perspective, bringing movement analysis directly into patients’ everyday lives.

From the Lab to Daily Life

The system is built around a full-body wearable solution integrating multiple inertial sensors into garments. This setup allows continuous monitoring of body movements outside the clinic, capturing how patients actually perform daily activities.

Data is wirelessly transmitted, processed remotely and transformed into structured reports, giving clinicians access to objective information that goes far beyond occasional in-clinic assessments.

Making Movement Measurable

One of the key innovations of the system lies in how data is translated into clear, actionable insights.

Instead of raw signals, clinicians receive meaningful indicators such as walking patterns, reaching capabilities and upper-limb usage. Among these, visual representations of hand movement distribution stand out as particularly effective, offering an immediate understanding of how patients use their body in space and how this evolves over time.

Why It Matters

What emerges clearly from the research is the value of objective, continuous data.

Care professionals benefit from a more complete picture of patient performance, especially in real-life conditions where behavior is less structured and more authentic. This enables earlier interventions, more personalized therapies and better tracking of progress.

At the same time, these insights can be shared with patients, helping them visualize improvements that might otherwise go unnoticed.

A Smarter Approach to Rehabilitation

The INTERACTION system represents a step toward a more connected and data-driven approach to healthcare.

By combining wearable technology, smart textiles and advanced data processing, it demonstrates how monitoring can move beyond the clinic and become part of everyday life.

For Smartex, this project reflects a core belief: technology should not only collect data, but turn it into meaningful information that supports both clinicians and patients in real-world conditions.
